First trip to Kiev

Our first flight to Kiev was hectic. First of all, we hardly were on time for flight check in. Martin was to set off just after his business meeting. It took him longer than he expected so I thought we’d be late. We were the last ones to check in. My nervousness doubled. This time I was afraid the representative of clinic won’t meet us at the airport because we landed almost at midnight. Still they did. We made appointments with three clinics in Kiev. Biotexcom clinic, the first one we visited, offered us free airport pickup and accommodation. It made our journey less stressful as everything was planned for us. They took care about everything. The next day, their driver waited us at the set time near our hotel to take us to the clinic. So, Biotexcom was the first one on our itinerary. First impression: located not far from the city center, small separate building that looks like a fairy take castle, not a hint of hi-tech style.

It’s located on a picturesque hill with beautiful views on the city. Interiors are very simple and plain. The clinic’s hall was crowded and some people even had no place to have a seat. We were met by our English speaking manager Anastasia. She was very busy, though, since we were not the only one couple with her that day. She invited us to a separate room with comfy upholstered chairs. She answered all our questions and we had a lot. She explained the peculiarities of each surrogacy package. They have three major packages. I’ll get it in more details the next time, if you don’t mind. Today I would like to share my general impression on the city and reproductive clinics we visited.
Ok, we thanked Anastasia for taking time and explaining everything to us. We told her that we were going to visit two other clinics. She didn’t mind and even helped us to get a cab. Our next destination was Ilaya clinic. It took us around 20 minutes to get there by car. As far as I understood, it’s located in the suburbs of Kiev. First impression was very good. Interiors are luxurious, hi-tech and seem to be very expensive. Equipment and furniture is brand new. There’re a lot of places where you can have a seat, watch TV or read a magazine (as I’ve told you already, in the first clinic having a seat was a problem as they have only one sofa for all the clients).

Unlike Biotexcom and despite of all its glory, Ilaya seemed to be deserted. The only patients I saw there were locals, no Europeans or other foreigners met. We saw a local lady (obviously patient) who was definitely not happy with something so they had rows with some lady from admiration. The reception girl we were talking to was not very good in English so it took them time to understand what we want. However, they invited us to a small room in white-green colors and offered some tea with biscuits. That was nice because we were already very hungry (they took our blood samples in the first clinic). Our manager came in around 10 minutes. It was a young and very beautiful lady. She told about all advantages of the clinic however the information on the fees was quite obscure. I don’t like it actually. To sum up, Ilaya also provides foreign patients with accommodation and translator. The minimum cost of surrogacy there is around 40k euro and is not final. All meds and possible risks like premature birth are not covered by your contract. We had to figure this out, but still there was one more clinic on our agenda. We took all those brochures and papers from Ilaya and asked them where we can have a lunch. They advised us Ukrainian food restaurant and even booked a table for us. Oh, I love this country for it. They all seem very responsive.
The restaurant was very cozy and service was quick. However, as to the food actually - Ukrainian food seemed too greasy for me. IMO. Coffee was great, though. The prices are minor if compared to our Norwegian ones. The same with taxi and public transport. 10-15 minutes taxi ride costs around 3 euro. Our restaurant lunch bill was around 10 euro. Street food is also everywhere, so you can have a bite any time.
In restaurants, some staff speaks English and they even have their menu in English. It came as a surprise for me.

Ok, now about Victoria clinic, our last destination. It’s located in the historical part of the city. We were astonished by architecture. In the meantime, history is combined with modern streams. The clinic seemed rather small to me. Interiors and equipment seemed to be not brand new like in Ilaya still quite normal.

We were kindly met and immediately invited to a meeting room with coffee and biscuits again. The manager spoke English very well. She was not very talkative, though. The key thing for me about this clinic was that they take care only of medical part of surrogacy program. No legal service provided, as well as they won’t help you get official papers for the baby when he or she is born. It’s not their business. Should we have run such risk? No.

  1. We haven't been to any of these clinics. I mean Ilaya or Victoria. But judging from the pictures they don't seem that impressive like Biotexcom. I can hardly imagine a repro center located on the ground floor of the multi storeyed building. Or as tiny as Victoria.. Of course I can be mistaken but I wouldn't count on much on such places. I wonder if those have their own lab.. On the whole, if the clinic's equipment doesn't seem new, this is definitely not a good sign for a repro center. I also came across some posts on boards saying ''stay away from Lotus clinic in Kiew'' I asked why and ladies told they had no respond from them, poor communication and no proper answers ever.. Quite irritating surely. Then one lady wrote their staff was very young and unexperienced. I'm not saying I think young drs are bad ones. But there must be experience in every field. And if it comes for example, you apply for the treatment at your 39 yrs old, trying for a baby for 9 yrs. And they say you're going to be treated by a 29 yrs old dr, this can't put one's mind at peace in any case!! Don't you think so!!
So probably there are as many views about the repro centers and their staff as many infertile are there on the planet.

  2. Seems I'll never forget our first visit to Kiew. I was so overwhelmed!! Appart from what we've watched on TV news, it was a completely peaceful place. It was early morning and everyone was hurring somewhere. We had half an hour left to our consultation. So asked the driver who met us at the airport where we could go to have breakfast. He was fast with suggestions. We ate sth from Ukrainian cuisine and drove to the clinic. We were met by a charming woman, later we got to know she was our dr. She was pleasant to talk to and like a breath of the fresh air after all the hesitations, worries and expectations. We knew what tests we had to undergo that day. She studied all our medical records and we discussed the most optimal treatment plan for us. She gave us loads of recommendations and warned we had to follow all those to have success in prospective. We all thought it was a nice begining of the day and our surrogacy plan itself. We were told about the waiting time frames, we studied our package options attentively and decided to go for VIP plan for 50k euros.

  3. I found this city absolutely exclusive! Felt myself like at home at times. I used to see Victoria clinic once. But it didn't make impression on me. I believe they have too small spare space to have all the novelties inside.. I didn't like inside of this clinic, I know it may not tell they are doing their work bad or sth. but I believe one should feel at comfort with clinic. And this Victoria didn't make this impression on me ..

  4. I'll be keeping all those pics in my heart forever. We've already been through our first consultation with bio texcom. Were truly amazed with their facilities, rooms sterility and building itself. Quite a peaceful area I should say. Seems everyone knows his role, so there's no fuss about things. The first impression is just superb. May it remain the same.

    1. Venice is a great hotel will not just have a friendly staff, but they will do everything they can to make your stay more comfortable. At Venice hotel, they’ve ensured their best-service promise with highly trained staff. In addition, they have a 24-hour concierge to help with your needs – great or small. It’s important to stay in a place that’s close to where you need to be, whatever that might be. So this is another plus of the place. They love the little stuff when it comes to staying away from home. In-room, HD TVs, free WiFi, luxurious bath products, free in-room coffee and tea service. Even access to an acclaimed exercise facility! We loved the place, we loved its staff who like what they’re doing.

  5. Soon afterwards I realized searching too much might give me a whole lot to think through. Sometimes the information discouraged me rather than helped. It could drain me. I realized that when my mind was overwhelmed it affected my mood, energy level, immune system and my day as well. Since than I concentrated on living well and enjoying each day that I get to live.
This is how it all started. but if I don't, then how will this dream be realised, how will my parents have any grandchildren...where does this end? Why is this happening? My husband said that he doesn't think it makes sense for us to go on without living our lives to the fullest...he thinks that i may not be able to mentally handle another cycle and his priority is us being ok and he doesn't want to look back years from now and feel like we wasted too much time chasing a dream that may not be..he is still the same as when I married him 9 years ago...he still loves to party and have a good time but I'm just not there anymore...ive got so immersed in this web and I don't know how to help myself understand the reality and open myself to more people about my situation.

    1. Hope is all you've got to push yourself towards success... so cling to it. Besides the regime, I'll also insist on various healthy lifestyle changes to expedite on the process. It's really sad when the clinic refuses to take the conventional or non-conventional way that can help the medical condition on in your case infertility. Biotexcom conducts free consultation seminar and conferences in London time to time which are like a plethora of insight into the infertility cases and it's the solution. I attended one of them and got to know a lot about how to improve your chances of success. You may attend if they are helding any anytime soon and see if you could find some really helpful tips.

    2. I couldn't read - so madly tough. And I'm so so sorry for that you had to face that. But life brings us hard moments to make us think the new way. I won't write all the adj your husband deserves after what he did to you. This is clear without saying. I want to talk to you, because you are brave and you are strong whatever happens. Even more you should be thankful your husband abandoned right now, not later. This is the beginning and you will cope. Just imagine getting divorced while being prego or so. If he dared to make this harm to you he was just not your man. You'll find yours undoubtedly, because the way we struggle problems is always blessed. Moreover, I'd not freeze eggs being in your shoes. I'd use donor sperm and do my best to have LO. If only you feel you are independent with financial side then don't wait -- act! Once holding you tiny you'll forget about all the complications and feel so good you have never felt before. One more thing, a couple of words as for my story. Me - then 43 yo with POF, dh - cancer (severe, but after chemos they did found a couple of healthy swimmers for the procedure, though my eggs were of no use. We had to use donor's ones. And we did so. I always keep saying: no matter how babies come to this world - it matters how they change our life - completely for the best. You should do the same - become a happy mother! Sending you much love and support xxx

  6. In case someone is waiting for the initial consultation with Biotexcom for surrogacy. Thought this might be useful. The initial consultation is to be scheduled at least 1 week ahead and contains the following activities:
A set of tests depending on the program (fasting is mandatory).
Consultation with a fertility specialist who will be in charge of your program (in case of stimulation you will need to have the transvaginal ultrasound check done).
Consultation with a manager who will guide you through the program step by step.
    Signing of contracts.
First payment (if you are taking medications for stimulation from the clinic, the medications are to be paid in cash on the day of consultation).
Before any initial consultation you will receive the Guidelines for the Initial Consultation – failure to follow these recommendations may affect the initial consultation in a negative way.
After you sign contracts and make the first payment, the medical team starts the selection process that includes:
Initial pre-selection by the local coordinator.
Consultation of the fertility specialist in Bio texcom in Kiev.
    Consultation of a psychologist.
Legal consultation and verification of documents.
screening for possible addictions (urine and blood tests).
This check-up process, including all necessary tests and exams, takes about 1 month.

  7. Fertility tourism is popular worldwide nowadays. People seek for help and have their own requirements on where to be treated in. No wonder, though. There are so many clinics to choose from!! I think it's necessary to highlight the following: One should look not for high success rates among clinics, but high live birth stats. One should consider law well before heading to this or that country for surrogacy not to have problems in future. One should clearfy all the sort of things before making the final decision. This is definitely not the one to be made in haste!

    1. I'm sorry ladies have to face this. It's very hard. Briefly, at the start of our journey I was 43 yo, dx: POF, problems with dh's swimmers. Our clinic (we passed ivf in Ukraine) told us we had to consider using de. Well, quite a tough moment but a wish to achieve success was definitely bigger. Though we signed 5 att package, we were blessed to get prego after the 1st shot. As for the tests before treatment. Tests do take time. It may take two or three visits to your doctor to complete examinations over a one to six month period (We made 3 visits). Some of the tests will need to be repeated. You see, they have to know the smallest details to help you and boost the chances. During this time it’s important not to become disheartened. Try to think positively, it really helps. Wish you all the best of luck!!

  8. Ladies, I've read that BioTexCom clinic began to offer a completely new treatment method. It says, it's beneficial for women 40+ and with low AMH, because they can still use their own eggs with IVF! Mitochondrial replacement therapy - a chance to give birth to a child who shares a genetic relationship with her and her partner. Mitochondrion is one of the most important components of any living cell, including the egg. In simple words, mitochondrion is the cell’s energy station. Essentially, its work consists in supplying the cell with vital energy for its normal functioning. To carry out such a procedure, an egg donor with a high functional activity of mitochondria (a blastocyst production rate of 70% or more), a patient (willing to get pregnant), and sperm for in vitro fertilization are required. Healthy functionally active mitochondria are taken from a donor’s oocyte and integrated with the patient’s cells. Next, fertilization with sperm and transfer of a healthy embryo into the patient’s uterus is performed. Women that went through multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts, as well as of older reproductive age, need to restore oocyte mitochondria in order to successfully become pregnant. A woman can become pregnant only if there are functionally active mitochondria in her oocytes. Donation of mitochondria is aimed to improve the situation.
Would you, ladies, try this method out? TIA for your comments.

  9. Actually we had two first consultations in defferent clinics. I'll talk about the last in Ukraine. When we arrived at the clinic we met with a GP. He started taking a complete medical history and arranging the necessary tests to determine the cause of infertility. Then we received all of our referrals for tests and scans. They included blood and semen samples and an ultrasound. At the 2nd visit our GP discussed the diagnosis and referred us to ivf specialist. She outlined a further treatment plan based on our medical history and test results. I think it's almost the same in fertility centers.
